Homes
Longhouses
This is a longhouse from the Potowatomi Indians. It was made from tree branches and pieces of bark. The roofs were made of reeds that were woven together very tightly to keep out the rain. Long houses were 150- feet long and all the people in the family lived there, including grandparents, their children, and their grandchildren.
Longhouses are good homes for people who plan to stay in the same place for a long time. The Iroquois were farming people who lived in permanent villages. Iroquois men sometimes built wigwams for themselves when they were going on hunting trips, but women might live in the same longhouse their whole life.

Wigwams
Wigwams are small houses, usually 8-10 feet tall. Wigwams are made of wooden frames which are covered with woven mats and sheets of birchbark. The frame can be shaped like a dome, like a cone, or like a rectangle with an arched roof.

Teepees
Teepees are tent-like houses. A tepee is made of a cone-shaped wooden frame with a covering of buffalo hide. Tepees are designed to set up and break down quickly, just like tents of today.
